INSPIRED BY TRUE EVENTS, BENEATH A MOTHER'S FEET TELLS THE STORY OF WEDAD, A SINGLE MOTHER IN MOROCCO, WHO FINDS HERSELF AT A DIFFICULT JUNCTURE IN HER LIFE. WEAVING CINEMA VERITÉ WITH SURREALISM, WE OBSERVE WEDAD'S INTERNAL STRUGGLE AS SHE FACES AN UNTHINKABLE DECISION: TO WALK AWAY FROM HER LIFE AND HER CHILDREN'S FUTURES.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

As a young woman in her native Morocco, my mother found herself at an impasse. A divorcée raising two young children alone while living with her parents in a modest one-room bungalow, she struggled to imagine a future for herself. In the midst of profound emotional turmoil, she secretly sold the gold bangles from her dowry, secured a passport, and walked out of her life, leaving her children behind.

This film reconstructs the thirty-six hours leading up to that moment of departure, excavating the emotional and material realities surrounding such a drastic decision.

Beneath a Mother’s Feet is, in part, an inquiry into the stories carried, reshaped, and retold across generations of my family. It recounts events that took place more than fifty years ago, yet whose consequences have rippled through time, shaping lives in enduring ways, including my own. The film is an attempt to make an incoherent past coherent: to use cinema to explore what remains unresolved, and perhaps move toward healing, understanding, and acceptance.

The film is also a call to recentre the lives of the matriarchs in my family: women steered toward lives of domesticity and childrearing, often shaped by hardship, yet defined by endurance and resistance to the expectations placed upon them.

At its heart, this is a story about maternal ambivalence and self-discovery, pieced together, like a zellij mosaic, from fragments of memory, imagination, and inherited stories. It inhabits the uneasy space between love and leaving, sacrifice and survival, drawing a line between past and present, speech and silence, the visible and the unseen.

While the film stands as a tribute to my mother, it also confronts a painful and often unspoken crossroads where personal aspiration collides with familial and societal expectation. A mother leaving her children may seem unforgivable. It may also be an act of survival. This film seeks not to justify that decision, but to honour its gravity and complexity.

APPROACH

ERASURE & RECONSTRUCTION

Beneath a Mother’s Feet is not a straightforward retelling, but a reconstruction of the past. Some elements came directly from what was handed down to me. These include my mother’s wedding portrait, with her husband’s face scribbled out in black biro, later reconstructed and placed into the film. Other fragments emerged through family stories: a conversation around the dinner table, Wedad embroidering at home, the act of selling her dowry gold.

Other moments arrived through memory shaped by imagination and dreams. One such image is her waking to find her hands stained with henna, something my mother claimed to have experienced both as a child and again many years later, surrounded by superstition and the lingering presence of the djinn. These stories remind me that the metaphysical has always existed alongside the everyday, informing how people understand their lives and make meaning of what cannot be easily explained.

Some things were erased deliberately, others lost to time, and many never spoken aloud. To reach toward these absences, I combined fragments with invention. I worked with both professional and non professional actors, inviting them to inhabit their roles through improvisation and personal identification. The use of surreal elements allowed me to suggest what language could not fully articulate: the weight of feeling, the texture of fear or longing, and the presence of forces that resist rational explanation.

The film is shaped as much by what remains as by what is missing. It does not attempt to restore every detail, but instead stays with the truths that surface in the spaces between memory and forgetting, silence and testimony, loss and invention.
